Round 2, Game 2: Chicago 86, Atlanta 73 - Shot selection, shot selection, shot selection

One fun thing about Twitter and hash tags, is that occasionally you will get people to @ mention you when you say something of interest. In this case, I made a remark about a timeout huddle plea by Larry Drew:

"As good as we were the last game, we have reverted back to taking a bunch of bad shots. We can't do that. Not on the road. And when you do that, you give a team life. And that's what we've done."

To which I said:

I had a nice little "chat" with an Atlanta sportswriter on the Hawks. Basically, he felt that the chief offender was Josh Smith, and that Johnson and Crawford were the only ones who could make shots.

What do I think?

You don't need to watch a lot of Hawks basketball to know that a majority of their offense this year is predicated on isolations and spot up shots. In fact, that leads to a large number of relatively tough long shots. When they go in, it looks great. When they don't...well...

In case you forgot, here's HoopData's Game 1 box score:

As a team, Atlanta scorched the Bulls in the following areas:
At Rim - 14-21 (66.7%)
Threes - 7-13 (53.8 %)

Of note, they shot:
3-9 Feet - 6-13 (46%)
16-23 Feet - 11-26 (42.3%)

Now, compare that to Game 2:
http://www.hoopdata.com/boxscore.aspx?id=310504004

At Rim - 12-23 (52.1%)
3-9 Feet - 2-6 (33%)
16-23 Feet - 6-30 (20%)
Threes - 3-13 (23.1 %)

To break that down specifically, you had the following players shoot terribly at that range:
Al Horford - 2-10
Josh Smith - 0-4
Marvin Williams - 0-4

Quite hilariously, one play off a timeout was to set a double screen on the left baseline for a deep Horford 2. He made it, but if your offense is to create long jumpers for those 3 players (Williams badly missed his deep jumpers), then I've got to question the shot selections your players choose to create and set up for themselves.

Overall, it was a sloppily-played game that featured a lot of missed shots. The Bulls crushed the Hawks on the board 58-39. Noah led the way with 19 pts and 14 rebounds (7 offensive). DRose put up numbers: 25 points, 10 assists, and 6 rebounds; and some really bad ones: 10-27 shooting (1-8 from 3 pt range) and 8 turnovers. Deng put in a steady 14 pts and 11 rebounds.

What about Boozer? 8 pts (4-12 shooting) and 11 rebounds and led the team in most times booed by home crowd. More on him later.

Off to Atlanta to get a better idea on whether this will end up being a short series (the best of Atlanta was in Game 1) or a long series (Chicago struggling on the road with no contributions from bench or defense).
